Improving translation status reporting

Registered by David Planella

The purpose of this specification is to provide better translation status reporting at the distro level in a resource external to Launchpad Translations. This is a continuation of the Lucid spec at [1]

The main goals are:

 * Ubuntu translators, users and customers have an overview of the overall status of translation of the distro for a given language
 * Translations which need work done are easily identified

Whiteboard

Work items for maverick-alpha-2:
[dpm] Talk to IS to know more about hosting location possibilities (translations.ubuntu.com or l10n.ubuntu.com): TODO
[dpm] Create a document explaining how statistics are calculated: DONE
[dpm] Change the page layout to include a link to the statistics documentation: DONE

Work items for maverick-alpha-3:
[adiroiban] Implement the Launchpad Translations reporting API: TODO
[dpm] Create the Django project for statistics in Launchpad: TODO
[dpm] Port the current statistics page to a Django project: TODO
[dpm] Use the current priority values to calculate statistics: TODO
[dpm] Create a view to show a per-language graph of translation activity, which will be updated regularly: TODO
[dpm] Create a view to show the list of templates that need attention: TODO

Status:

* Documented current stats calculation methods at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/Stats and added link to it to the stats pages

Session notes:

 http://people.ubuntu.com/~dpm/ubuntu-10.04-translation-stats.html

* Improvements:
  * A link to documentation on how the statistics are calculated. This should
    include the actual list of packages.
  * Show the list of templates that need attention
  * Language pack releases could be marked
    * It might be not necessary if we have a diagram updated regularly. this would give an overview of the the translation activity and would also help teams manage their work. An idea would be to click on a language and a graph would pop up.
  * Hosting location to be changed to a generic location: e.g. translations.ubuntu.com or l10n.ubuntu.com

* Consumers:
  * Translators
  * People wanting to know the status of each language
