Auto dim the lcd from the light from devices you may not think of.

It would be nice to use a webcam that is built into most laptops now a days for more than a webcam.
Why not create a small application or integrate it into gnome power manager that can monitor the brightness of the room from the webcam and adjust the lcd brightness accordingly.
I doubt more that one or two adjustment settings would be needed. Sensitivity and darkness to lcd brightness ratio.
I am willing to write it myself... but with GSoC I will be slowed. If someone else would like to pick it up, by all means.

Whiteboard

Won't powering up and down the webcam use a lot of power, thereby preventing any form of power conservation?
-- Not necessarily. Active states of the computer can be accounted for. For example. When the computer comes back from a suspend, boot, or locked screen. It could check. Or how about when the computers mouse is moving it could check every seconds or so.
-- Additionally, my wife would like it when she turns on or off the computer at night. Or when she is using the computer all day. It could adjust the brightness for her. And she is using a desktop. Not even a lappy.
--I am also curious if the system uses power from my built in web-cam all the time in Linux? Or does it really turn on and off.
--***The problem*** would probably be in detecting the light levels. I wonder if cameras even have a feature that tells the light levels so that software can use it to make adjustments for the cam. That way we don't have to process an image. THAT'S where the power would be consumed. Processing an image over and over...
