Use simple shapes (circles, arcs, rectangles and polygons) on export when possible
I had an issue when exporting a filled circle to EMF from Inkscape, another application (Metadraw www.metadraw.com), read the exported circle as a sequence of segments looking like a circle without the fill color. When exporting the same circle from OpenOffice ODG to EMF, Metadraw showed two shapes the perimeter of the circle and the circle.

[2015-02-26 jazzynico] Some improvements in Inkscape 0.91. Ellipses now produce a circle or an arc, and no longer a path. Rectangles already save as rectangles unless you convert them to paths. As for polygons, Inkscape has no tool to produce that kind of object, and I'm not sure converting Bézier curves would be a good idea.
