Default, Shape, User Defined and Child Connectors and How they Would Work
Connectors currently have two types. Default which connects the center of an object and User Defined which connects an arbitrary fixed point on the document to the shape. An upgrade of the system is proposed that while cleaning up the connector code we would allow for:
Shape based connectors: these are positions on the shape which are interesting to connect to, each shape's code would create a list of connector locations which would be shown to the user as possible connector sites. For instance squares would have 4 side connector sites, 4 corner connector sites. The Default center connector will be a different kind of connector since it can apply to any object not just shapes.
Child connectors are shapes within a group object which have been designated as transcending their child status to provide their own shape's sites as possible connector locations for the whole grouped object. This allows for arbitrary creation of stencils with complex connectors which simply use the group mechanism to control the position of the lines.
Other ideas and modification sot be added while drafting.
